OVER 2,500 athletes have descended on the Oshana Region for the National Youth Games (NYG), where Team Namibia is expected to be selected.
Teams from all 14 regions of the country are well represented.
The games kicked off with a street procession from the Oshana Regional Library towards the Oshakati Independence Stadium, where the official opening is expected to be held.
This event allows athletes competing in various sports codes to showcase their regions and promotes unity among them as they mingle with each other, despite competing for the top spot.
The games are taking place across three different towns in the Oshana Region. In Oshakati, athletics and male football are being hosted at the Oshakati Independence Stadium.
In Ongwediva, netball, karate, and female football are taking place at the Oshana Gymnasium, while boxing is being held at the Ongwediva Multi-Purpose Center. Table tennis is being hosted at the Hifikepunye Pohamba UNAM Campus.
Meanwhile, volleyball is being played at the Ondangwa Tennis Court, and basketball games are being hosted at Andimba Toivo ya Toivo.
The games will officially be opened by the Minister of Sport, Youth, and National Service, Agnes Tjongarero, at the Oshakati Independence Stadium.
