ABOUT 72 houses burned down in Aussenkehr on Wednesday, 11 September 2024.
According to Chief Inspector Elifas Kuwinga of the Namibian Police (NamPol), the incident took place at Block 5 in Aussenkehr, //Kharas Region.
“It is alleged that a fire broke out at one of the reed houses, which led to the fire spreading over to the nearby houses. The wind was blowing and thus resulted to an estimated number of 72 reed houses being burned to ashes,” Kuwinga explained.
He revealed that the fire was eventually extinguished by community members and police officers, using water tanks from the grape companies. Kuwinga confirmed that no serious injuries or fatalities were recorded during the fire incident.
“Community members lost belongings such as documents, food, clothes, blankets and mattresses and are currently stranded as they don’t have places to sleep,” Kuwinga said.
The cause of the fire is still unknown at this stage.
