OSHANA Regional Commander, Commissioner Naftal Lungameni Sakaria, said their offices are not debt collectors and should not be used as a gateway by debt collectors.
Sakaria made these remarks during the Oshana Police Women Network workshop on Wednesday in Ongwediva, emphasizing that the police are not debt collectors and are not supposed to enforce payments owed to debt collectors, as it could lead to legal trouble.
According to Sakaria, this is a matter beyond the jurisdiction of the police.
“One of the most common issues brought to our attention is debt collection. In cases where community members make personal agreements, verbal or written, it is important to understand that these are not matters for the police to handle,” he said.
He stressed that it should be made clear that the police are not debt collectors.
Sakaria indicated that such issues should be addressed in courts or through registered debt collection companies that are empowered to resolve these disputes.
