Elderly man robbed of close to N$50k in Hochfeld

Staff Reporter

A 79-YEAR-OLD man from a farm near Hochfeld, in the Okahandja district, was scammed out of N$49,090.00 after receiving a call from an unknown woman pretending to be an employee of First National Bank of Namibia (FNB).

According to Chief Inspector Elifas Kuwinga, media liaison officer within the Namibian police, the incident of fraud occurred on 4 September 2024, around 13:00.

“It is alleged that a 79-year-old Namibian male victim was misled and defrauded by a female individual who called him and misrepresented herself as an employee of FNB. She informed the victim that there was a suspicious withdrawal of N$4,000.00 from his FNB account, which she claimed she wanted to reverse. She further requested the victim to provide her with the digits on the back of his ATM card as well as the PIN number, which the victim did. Shortly after, the victim received an OTP number that the suspect requested, and she then asked the victim to verify the OTP to her. A short while later, an amount of N$49,090.00 was transferred from the victim’s account to a Bank Windhoek account and immediately withdrawn thereafter. Police investigations on the matter are ongoing, with no arrest made and no recovery of the money yet,” Kuwinga said.
