A 48-YEAR-OLD man was allegedly trampled to death by an elephant at Oshitumbe village in the Tsandi Constituency.
The deceased has been identified as Shivute Efraim.
Omusati Regional Commander, Commissioner Ismael Basson, said the deceased was last seen on Sunday night at Eviliwa location. His lifeless body was discovered on Monday morning by a community member.
“It is suspected that he was on his way home from Eviliwa location and was attacked by an elephant and trampled to death, as elephant tracks were observed at the scene,” Basson said.
He said that a herd of elephants was seen in the area late on Sunday, and community members were cautioned about the movement of the elephants.
Meanwhile, Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism spokesperson Romeo Muyunda said that a herd of approximately 20 elephants was observed in the area. Ministry officials have since been dispatched, and investigations are ongoing.
“We extend our sympathy and condolences to the bereaved family,” he said.
He also cautioned members of communities in wildlife-prone areas to refrain from walking in the bushes at night.
