THE City of Windhoek has confirmed the death of one of its ambulance drivers, who died in a car accident while returning from a call-out at Katutura Hospital to the Maxuilili fire station, accompanied by a crew of two firefighters.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the tragic loss of life of our colleague, resulting from a motor vehicle accident involving a City of Windhoek ambulance, on Sunday, 7 July 2024, at around 07:27 on Hosea Kutako Drive in the Northern industry area. The Emergency and Disaster Risk Management Control Centre received a distress call about the accident, which involved two vehicles. A City of Windhoek rescue team was dispatched from headquarters and promptly arrived at the scene. The victims were removed from the wreckage, and advanced medical treatment was administered following established protocols,” said Lydia Amutenya, Public Relations Officer within the City of Windhoek.
She added that, unfortunately, despite the immediate and advanced medical efforts by the rescue team, due to the nature of the impact and severity of injuries, one of the victims succumbed to his injuries.
“The name of the deceased cannot be revealed at this stage. The other victim is currently in serious but stable condition and receiving treatment at a local hospital. The accident scene has been handed over to the Namibian police for further investigation. The Windhoek Municipal Council and the entire staff extend sincere condolences to the family of our deceased colleague during this difficult time. We also wish the colleague receiving medical attention at a local hospital strength and a speedy recovery,” Amutenya concluded.
