Released rape convict rape again and commits suicide

Staff Reporter

A RECENTLY released rape convict who served 10 years in prison Herman De Klerk, committed suicide after allegedly raping a 31-year-old woman this week.

According to Chief Inspector Illeni Shapumba of the Erongo police, the incident happened on Monday, 13 May 2024, around 19:00, at a house in Narraville, Walvis Bay.

“It was alleged that the victim, who resides in the flat, was called by the suspect to assist him in closing one of the windows that is usually stuck. After they closed the window, the suspect locked the house door, grabbed her by her neck, and, following other acts of force, pushed her into the bathroom and engaged in sexual acts with her under coercive circumstances. After he was done, he threatened to kill himself if she reported the matter. The victim, upon returning to her flat, informed someone who called the Police,” Shapumba said.

He added that the victim, who was found in a terrified condition by the Police, was taken to the hospital for a medical examination.

“The suspect, who was the nephew of the owner of the house, was allegedly not found at the house and was not arrested at the time. On Tuesday, 14 May 2024, at about 15:00, the Police at Narraville attended to a suicide incident reported at the same house where the rape incident took place. The deceased was identified as Herman De Klerk N/M, 38-years-old (rape suspect). He committed suicide by hanging in the garage at home,” Shapumba said.

He concluded that the accused/deceased was recently released from Correctional Facilities after serving 10 years in custody on a Rape case.

Police investigations continue.
