A total of 4 815 cases of Gender-based Violence (GBV) have been registered with the Namibian Police between April 2023 and January 2024.
This is a decrease compared to the 6 260 cases of GBV reported during the same period in 2022/23.
This information was provided by Inspector-General of NamPol, Lieutenant General Joseph Shikongo, during the Commemoration of International Women’s Day held in Windhoek on Friday.
According to Shikongo, these statistics paint a grim picture of the society we live in, and he called on Namibians to stand up against violence on women and children, educate each other, and report all criminal activities to the nearest police station.
“We must also recognize that our work towards gender equality is far from complete. We still have much progress to make, both within our organizations and in society as a whole,” he said.
He added that they must continue to challenge gender stereotypes, break down barriers to advancement, and ensure that all women have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Shikongo indicated that Gender-Based Violence is a human rights violation and should therefore be categorized as a crime against humanity, as its effects extend beyond the individual who suffered.
He noted that in most cases, children who are dependent on the victims and perpetrators also suffer emotionally and psychologically, if not physically. This can result in children growing up to be abusers or victims themselves, thereby perpetuating the cycle of domestic violence and putting strain on the community.
“As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let us recommit ourselves to the pursuit of gender equality. Let us work together to create a more inclusive and equitable society where every individual, regardless of gender, has the opportunity to thrive,” he said.
He added that they need to honour the contributions of women not just today, but every day, as they strive to build a brighter future for generations to come.
Shikongo emphasized that NamPol is committed to promoting gender equality and empowering women within their ranks.
He said that they recognize the importance of diversity and inclusivity in creating a stronger, more effective, and efficient police force. By embracing the talents and perspectives of women, they can better meet the diverse needs of the communities they serve.
