A FAMILY in the Oneshila informal settlement of Oshakati is living in fear of a dead tree falling on top of their residence after members of the town council’s fire and rescue unit declared their inability to remove it. The tree literally hangs above their house after it fell during a downpour last week. The falling dead tree hit and partially damaged a nearby pit latrine, which blocked it from falling on the house and potentially causing disastrous consequences.
Fire and rescue workers were summoned, but after observing the scene, declared that they did not possess the appropriate equipment to remove the dead tree, which now hinges only on the damaged latrine.
“They told us that they cannot do anything and advised us to either look for help elsewhere or evacuate the house altogether,” said one of the family members who are still living in that endangered house. “We have nowhere to go.”
