SECURITY guards from Namibia Protection Services, who were picking up cash from various shops at Grove Mall, were robbed by five men at gunpoint today.
According to Chief Inspector Elifas Kuwinga of the Namibian police, the armed robbery occurred on 14 February 2024 at Grove Mall, in the backyard of a loading zone.
Kuwinga explained that three security officers from Namibia Protection Services began collecting money from various companies at about 08:00. At around 10:06, one officer went to collect two boxes of money from Checkers Shop, while the driver remained in the vehicle.
“On his way back, he placed the boxes on the ground to open the back of the vehicle. Suddenly, he saw a group of five armed robbers approaching him, armed with pistols and one AK 47, ordering him to lie down. The driver was also ordered to do the same. They proceeded to gather all the boxes of money in the pickup bakkie, including those on the ground and loaded them into their getaway vehicle. Afterwards, they drove away as the gate of the backyard wasn’t closed,” Kuwinga said.
He added that the getaway vehicle used was a white Jetta, bearing two different GRN numbers: GRN 27012 at the back and GRN 32911 at the front.
The total amount of money collected from various companies was N$305,987.50. Although the two victims were uninjured, their two service firearms (pistols) were also taken away by the robbers.
Police investigation is underway.
