THE Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation has said that the Republics of Namibia and Angola are in regular contact regarding the issue of affected children. They have taken concerted efforts, in accordance with their obligations under international law, to address and find a permanent solution for these children.

Ambassador Penda A. Naanda, Executive Director of the Ministry of International Relations, explained that this includes the repatriation of 18 children on the 12th of June 2023 and 6 in October 2023. “The Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare is currently housing four Angolan children at the Namibian Children Home in Windhoek as part of the ongoing efforts of the two governments,” Naanda said.

“The Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation is perturbed by messages circulating on social media alleging that the Government of Namibia is not addressing the issue of children from the Republic of Angola who are wandering, selling, and begging on the streets of Windhoek and other towns in Namibia. The Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation wishes to clarify and inform that the allegations circulating on various social media platforms are devoid of any truth and are intended to mislead the Namibian public,” Naanda said.

He added that the relationship between the Republics of Angola and Namibia, based on longstanding bonds of friendship, solidarity, and supreme sacrifice, continues to be characterized by warm and excellent bilateral relations between the two countries and peoples. Naanda said that in addressing common challenges, the two countries are guided by the existing relationship.

“The Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation and the Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare will, at the appropriate time, provide further updates on the common efforts of the two governments to debunk the misinformation campaigns of some malicious actors within Namibian society,” Naanda said.
