TWO men in their early twenties, Moses Sem and Quantito van Vuuren, who were arrested for murder and rape at Walvis Bay over the weekend, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court and were remanded in custody. The case was postponed to April for further police investigation.
The two were arrested in connection with the rape and murder of 53-year-old Vernon Gavin, whose body was found in his residence in Walvis Bay on Friday. The deceased’s neighbours discovered the body in the bathroom, with the legs tied and a cloth stuffed in his mouth. The police said that he was probably raped before his death. His Samsung Galaxy 14 phone was the only item stolen.
Inspector Ileni Shapumba of the Erongo Police said that the stolen cellphone was recovered, leading to the arrest of the suspects. Shapumba praised the team of detectives for their excellent work.
“Our priority remains to prevent crime before it happens, thereby protecting lives and property. However, when crime takes place, we commit ourselves to investigate and arrest the perpetrators as well as to prepare evidence for court in a professional manner to restore hope, trust, and confidence in the community in the Police,” he added.
