Oshana records 107 road crashes in nine months

A TOTAL of 107 road accidents were reported in the Oshana Region in the last nine months alone.

Of those cases, Oshakati recorded the highest with 40, followed by Ongwediva with 34 and Ondangwa with 33.

Oshana Deputy Commissioner Nico Steenkamp said they also recorded a total of 7 fatalities during the same period, with 12 people seriously injured.

Steenkamp indicated that three people lost their lives during road crashes in Ondangwa, while Oshakati and Ongwediva recorded two cases each.

Meanwhile, a total of seven people were seriously injured during the period as a result of road accidents in Ongwediva, with Ondangwa having three and Oshakati two.

“People are always encouraged to adhere to road laws and regulations to stay safe and save lives,” he said.

He urged Namibians to always be vigilant on the road and adhere to set standards.

Road safety has now also become a topic of discussion, with women in road safety recently engaging in discussions on how best to protect lives and their communities.

They held a two-day conference led by the MVA Fund team under the theme “Empowering Communities for Safer Roads.”

MVA Fund CEO Rosalia Martins-Hausiku said that their dedication to road safety helps in the prevention of injuries, and it is essential to recognize that injuries sustained in road accidents can have long-lasting physical, emotional, and financial consequences for individuals and families.
