THERE is an alarming increase in incidents where young mothers go to bed with a live baby and wake up with a dead one, raising serious concerns and questions among community members.
One such incident occurred in the Eenghundi village in the Oshikuku constituency of the Omusati Region at the end of last month when an unidentified mother woke up shortly after midnight to breastfeed her two-month-old baby boy, only to discover that the baby had died.
According to the police, the results of the postmortem examination indicated that the baby’s death was caused by suffocation, which is now the focus of a police investigation.
This was the latest in a series of recent cases where otherwise healthy babies died in their sleep while sharing a bed with their mothers.
