Central regions witness light rainfall amidst sweltering heat

Staff Reporter

WHILE most of the interior parts of the country remained quite hot this week, some areas, especially in the central regions, once again received light rainfall between Tuesday and Wednesday morning.

According to the Namibia Meteorological Services, Groot Aub in the Khomas Region recorded 20.3 millimetres (mm) of rain between Tuesday and Wednesday morning. While this marked one of the highest rainfalls recorded during this period, several other central areas experienced scattered light rainfall and drizzle at the same time.

This includes Windhoek in the Khomas Region, which recorded approximately 0.2 mm of rain in most areas. However, specific neighbourhoods in the capital city, such as Klein Windhoek, Pioneerspark, and Olympia, saw rainfall ranging from 1.5 mm to 3 mm between Tuesday and Wednesday.

Several other locations outside the Khomas Region also received light rainfall between Tuesday and Wednesday. This includes Grootfontein in the Otjozondjupa Region, Outjo in the Kunene Region, and Oshakati in the Oshana Region, all of which recorded around 0.2 mm of rain during the aforementioned period.

The Namibia Meteorological Services predicted that interior areas are likely to experience further light rain showers on Thursday, especially in the South. However, this will be accompanied by hot weather in several places in the interior. The Namibia Meteorological Services identified Ondangwa, Oshakati, Outapi, Rundu, Sesfontein, Otjinene, and Tsumkwe as some of the places that can expect maximum temperatures as high as 38°C on Thursday.

Fortunately, the coastal areas will be spared from this extreme heat again on Thursday. Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, Lüderitz, and Henties Bay were predicted to have minimum temperatures between 12°C and 14°C and maximum temperatures between 18°C and 26°C. The aforementioned locations are also likely to experience partly cloudy conditions and mild weather on Thursday, along with occasional fog patches.
