A 25-YEAR-OLD Zambian national, identified as Preston Mhango, lost his life in an accident that occurred on Thursday near Katima Mulilo in the Zambezi Region.
Mhango was a member of the Zambian Squash Team, who were in Namibia to compete in the Visions Consulting Tri-Nations Squash Test Series, held from 25 to 27 September in Windhoek.
Among the players representing Namibia were three Trustconians: Adri Lambert, who is also the President of the Namibian Squash Association, Max Endjala, and Le-Hugo van Rooyen.
“It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we come together today to offer our deepest condolences to the Zambia Squash Team and the family and friends of Preston Mhango. We are devastated to share the news that Preston, a cherished member of the Zambia squash family, has tragically passed away in a car accident on their way back from the Visions Consulting Tri-Nations Squash Test Series in Namibia,” the Namibian Squash Association confirmed.
Mhango was en route to Zambia with his teammates, some of whom are currently fighting for their lives at the Katima Mulilo State Hospital. It is alleged that the accident was caused by a tire bursting, which resulted in a minibus rolling.
“In the spirit of sportsmanship that binds us all, let us remember Preston for the joy and inspiration he brought to the game of squash. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who had the privilege of knowing him and watching him play. His legacy will endure in our hearts, and the love for squash that he embodied will inspire us all,” the Namibian Squash Association added.
The Visions Consulting Tri-Nations Squash Test Series featured squash teams from Namibia, Zambia, and South Africa facing off this week. During this tournament, the Zambian Squash team achieved second place in both the Men’s and Ladies’ categories, while Namibia secured third place in both Men’s and Ladies’ divisions.
