A week-long celebration of cultural heritage is underway in the town of Eenhana in the Ohangwena Region.
The heritage week, which started on Monday and will conclude on Friday, is being celebrated under the theme: “Heritage and Culture: A Rock-Solid Foundation.”
The celebration, officially opened by Governor Walde Ndevashiya, kicked off with a street procession led by the police brass band to Eenhana Business Park.

Speaking at the official opening, Ndevashiya called on Namibians to keep their culture alive. He emphasized that heritage plays a significant role in their society, as culture and tradition form an individual’s identity. The values instilled by culture reflect how people tend to live their lives.
Furthermore, Ndevashiya stated that the value of tradition in Namibia has evolved from the pre-colonial era to the present, and all Namibians are encouraged to celebrate and commit themselves to protecting the beautiful natural and cultural heritage.
He added that heritage or culture is not only about cultural dances, songs, clothing, or traditional food; it’s also about preserving it for future generations. Ndevashiya emphasized that a people without knowledge of their past history, origin, heritage, and culture are like a tree without roots.
According to Education Director Isak Hamatwi, they need to preserve cultural heritage for future generations, as it gives them pride in their identity.
