Driver killed in Arandis crash identified

Floris Steenkamp

THE Namibian Police in Erongo have released a report on the deadly crash between a light pick-up and a heavy truck near Arandis this morning, which claimed the life of 48-year-old Windhoek resident Morné Gareth Openshaw.

Openshaw was travelling in a Mahindra light pick-up and, in poor visibility, did not see a minibus driving in front of him slowing down and pulling over. This resulted in Openshaw’s vehicle colliding with the minibus from the rear, after which his vehicle veered over into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with an oncoming truck.

Openshaw was killed on impact, and according to the police report, he had one passenger onboard who was injured. The driver of the truck also sustained injuries, although neither person’s injuries were life-threatening.

The minibus that Openshaw hit carried an unknown number of passengers who all escaped unscathed.

As Eastwind conditions are set to continue for the next few days, motorists are warned of poor visibility and sand on all roads leading to Namibian coastal towns. In these poor driving conditions, it is normal for vehicles to slow down or even come to a stop, increasing the possibility of road accidents. It is advisable, if possible, to avoid driving in these conditions.
