GOVERNOR of Kavango West, Sirkka Ausiku, has urged farmers in the region to submit proposals for the Green Scheme. This call comes after an advertisement for proposals for the Zone was issued.
The region currently has two developed Green Schemes, namely Musese and Sikondo. The aim of these schemes is to maximize irrigation opportunities and promote agro-production in order to make Namibia self-sufficient in food production.
“The Green Schemes hold the potential to unlock crop production and turn the region into a food basket,” Ausiku said.
She emphasized the need for technical and financial support to help farmers operate at full capacity and achieve the goal of food self-sufficiency.
Regarding land reform, Ausiku mentioned that the Kavango West Communal Land Board was established in 2021. However, she noted that land management and illegal fencing continue to be challenges in the community.
She encouraged the Communal Land Board to organize community meetings to address and discourage these practices.
