THE Mayor of Rehoboth, Amanda Groenewaldt, recently announced the official opening of Rehoboth’s Drug Unit Office, which was established to fight against the town’s prevalent drug-related crimes. The office building was made available by Rehoboth Town Council to tackle the town’s drug trafficking and abuse problem. Groenewaldt handed the building’s keys over to the Inspector General of the Namibian Police (NamPol), Lieutenant General Josheph Shimweelao Shikongo, and thanked the police for making the Drug Unit a reality in Rehoboth.

“It could not have come at a better time because drug dealing, trafficking and abuse remains a major problem for every household that is dealing with its devastating consequences daily,” she said.

According to Rehoboth Town Council’s acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Ronald Robert Windswaai, the establishment of the office is intended to offer hope to the people of Rehoboth who are actively fighting against drug abuse in their community.

Shikongo promised to make use of the office resources to eliminate drug-related crimes in Rehoboth. He also pledged to root out disloyal law enforcement members who are assisting drug dealers with drug-related crimes. He called on the community to assist by bringing forth information that will help the police, emphasising the importance of inter-agency cooperation.

“We are dealing with transnational organized crime, and this is a serious problem not just in Namibia but across the world. The establishment of the Drug Unit Office in Rehoboth is a significant milestone in our fight against drug-related crimes in the region,” he said.
