YESTERDAY marks the 63rd anniversary of the formation of the SWAPO Party, and all SWAPO members, supporters and sympathisers are therefore invited to celebrate this milestone in Grootfontein, in the Otjozondjupa Region, this Saturday, 22 April.
SWAPO’s Secretary General, Sophia Shaningwa, said that the anniversary will be celebrated at Grootfontein’s Omulunga Stadium, with proceedings starting at 8:00 on Saturday. The event, she added, will be held under the theme “SWAPO Party United for Inclusive Development and Shared Prosperity”.
The Secretary General explained that the goal of the commemoration is to pay tribute to the people who contributed to the formation and shaping of the SWAPO Party.
“Our revolutionary tale is one of the resilience and triumph of the spirited African people. We pay homage to all revolutionaries who have contributed towards the rich heritage of the SWAPO Party,” Shaningwa added.
She explained that the party was formed 63 years ago at the height of apartheid, labour exploitation and colonialism, with the intention to unify Namibians in the national liberation struggle.
“It was a historic commitment to fight for a common cause, which was to end colonial segregation,” Shaningwa said.
The importance of this milestone was further emphasised by President Hage Geingob, who said that the “glorious movement was formed with the mission of liberating Namibians from Apartheid oppression”.
“SWAPO succeeded in that historic mission. Over the past 33 years, SWAPO has been hard at work to unite and to ensure the economic development of Namibia. SWAPO Party of Namibia will continue to work hard to complete the mission of socio-economic well-being for all Namibians. On this historic day, I wish the rank and file of our victorious movement a Happy 63rd Anniversary,” Geingob said.
