A 16-YEAR-OLD mother, identified as Haingura Paula Mbuze, died alongside her 11-month-old baby, Leontine Ndambu, after she was struck by lightning while carrying her child on her back.
The fatal lightning strike also claimed the life of a 43-year-old man, identified as Maseka Joseph Kasinga, while injuring two others.
According to the Namibian Police’s weekend crime bulletin, the incident happened on 11 March 2023 at about 17:00 at Ntara village in the Kavango West Region.
It’s alleged that the five victims were standing while watching soccer at the Ntara Local Sports Field when the lightning struck them. Three died on the spot, while two of the victims, Haikera Justina Nangura (32) and Kunberth Frans (26), survived the incident.
The next of kin of the deceased persons were informed and their remains were transported by police to Rundu State Mortuary for autopsies to be conducted. The injured victims received medical attention at Bunya Health Centre and were discharged the next day.
