THE Oshikoto regional athletic championship has officially kicked off at the Oshakati Independence Stadium.
The event is organised by the Namibia School Sport Union (NSSU) and will see primary and secondary athletes from the region competing for a spot on the regional team.
The region is expected to select 50 athletes that will represent them at the national games slated for 28 April in Windhoek.
NSSU Oshikoto secretary Freida “Nelly” Uukunde said that the athletes will be selected in both track and field categories.
Uukunde indicated that they have four zones, represented from Tsumeb to Onethendi, whereby 90–100 athletes were selected during their concluded zonals.
“We are looking forward to our athletes being among those that will be selected for the national team and hopefully competing for Region five games,” she said.
The age categories are under 13, 15, 17, and 19 for both track-and-field events.
