More boxing rings needed in the North

MORE boxing rings are needed in the northern parts of country to cater for the increasing interest in the sport of boxing.

Currently, there is only one ring that is used to cater for communities from the Oshana, Ohangwena, Omusati, Oshikoto and Kunene regions.

This has left a huge burden on sports organisers as they are forced to pay exorbitant fees to get a ring from private business people.

Renting a ring from private companies can cause about N$4000 to N$6000 per tournament.

Oshana Regional Sport officer Petrus Andima indicated that they need more boxing rings to meet the growing demand from organisers in the northern area.

Currently, there are only two rings used for the region, with one being completely worn out.

“We only have one effective ring which is used among the five regions, this mostly results in clashes when the time comes to rent it out,” he said.

Andima indicated that the government rings are put-up for rental for N$300 only. The funds are used for maintenance purposes only.

He explains that they want to do more, but do not have enough resources to cater for all sporting needs, especially for the boxing fraternity.
