Okongo hit by a shortage of medical personnel

THE shortage of staff in the health care system remains an issue of great concern at the Okongo district hospital in the Ohangwena Region.

The hospital, which averages 30 000 patients per year, requires more nursing and medical personnel.

The hospital’s senior medical officer, Lama Okitemungu, said that despite facing a lot of challenges, human resources shortage is the biggest challenge which needs urgent intervention.

Okitemungu stated that they get patients from faraway places such as Kavango-West and Oshikoto regions as well as from the southern areas of Angola.

“The shortage of medical and nursing personnel is affecting service delivery,” said Okitemungu.

He added that they currently have 42 nurses and few assistance doctors at the hospital, a number that is far below the requirement.
