IMPROVING road infrastructure is key to development, hence the Ongwediva Town Council officially commissioned Church Street.

The 1.6km road stretches from Abraham Nyambali to Kahumba Kandola Street and was officially commissioned on Wednesday.

The project started in September 2021 and was completed in June 2022 at a cost of N$ 8.2 million.

The town’s Mayor Taarah Shalyefu said the decision to upgrade the road came as a result of continuous consultations between Council and the residents in pursuit of developmental agendas which in turn contribute to the much-anticipated promotion of sustainable local economy and quality Municipal service delivery.

He said the completion of this bitumen signifies Council’s commitment to improve road network in town. He indicated that their long-term strategic approach is to ensure that roads leading to institutions are tarred thereby connected to all economic active points in Ongwediva.

“With the limited resources at our disposal, Council shall continue to identify significant roads for upgrading,” he said.

He said that in addition to upgrading of gravel roads to bitumen standards, Council will continue performing its vested responsibility of maintaining Municipal services including gravel roads for easy access by the residents.

Shalyefu indicated that this is done through contracting companies with road work expertise in order to sustain quality workmanship.

He then urged road users to adhere to
the road signs and avoid over speeding in a residential area because such can cause injuries and even death.

Speaking on behalf of the residents, Tatekulu Moses Hamutumwa said they are grateful to the Council for responding positively to their plight for better road network.

“We are now able to enter our houses and business space smoothly,” he said.

He recounted that Ongwediva Town is known for its leading role in development and ensuring service is brought closer to the people.
