THE 50-year-old Joseph Kalihonda from the Mashare Constituency in Rundu, who is accused of murdering Daniel Kasimbombo (48) for allegedly being in an affair with his wife, was denied bail yesterday after making his first appearance in the Rundu Magistrates court.
Kalihonda is charged with murder and was arrested last week in the Mausivi Village, after he purportedly attacked Kasimbombo, who is suspected to have been sleeping with his wife.
He stabbed him with a knife twice in the back and once in the neck, before he fell to the ground.
During his court appearance, Kalihonda had told the magistrate court that on that morning, he was lying under a tree with his wife when the victim approached his homestead. He alleged that, while he was pretending to be asleep, his wife and the victim had a conversation which he overheard. The victim had allegedly asked his wife if he was sleeping and the wife said yes. The wife then informed the victim, according to Kalihonda, that her husband will be going to work at night and that the victim must not have any fear about coming to her house.
Kalihonda further alleged that, while he overheard everything discussed, he pretended he had not heard their conversation anyway, and that he slept and woke later to leave for work.
The murder accused further said that a few hours after he left for work, he returned and decided not to go straight home but hide under a tree near their house. He alleged that after some time and while under the tree, he saw the victim approaching, carrying a bucket. The victim had dropped the bucket and he did not see that Kalihonda was hiding in the tree.
The accused then, according to his testimony before court, asked the victim what he is doing at his house. The commotion kicked off, and the suspect punched the victim who fell to the ground. The victim had purportedly tried to run but was stabbed with an Okapi Knife.
Kalihonda admitted that he killed the victim and confessed that he had intentions to kill him because he had allegedly taken the victim to the community court before, after he ostensibly found his wife coming from the victim’s house, and assumed they are sleeping together.
He further testified that it was during the confrontation when he pulled out his Okapi knife, stabbed the victim twice in the back and once in the neck to finish him off so he could no longer run. Thereafter, he went to his wife and informed her that the guy she always denied having an affair with is dying outside.
He then left to work and later decided to hand himself to the police, where he was arrested.
He is remanded in custody and his case is postponed to 11 January 2023, in order to allow the investigations to be carried out. In addition, the state pointed out that due to the seriousness of the offense, and the interest of the administration of justice, releasing the accused on bail is not advisable.
