2022 European Film Festival launched

Staff Reporter

THE 2022 European Film Festival was launched on Tuesday, 27 September, by the Delegation of the European Union (EU) and it can be attended for free every Wednesday from 5 October until 30 November.

“We are proud to host the EU Film Festival in Namibia this year again, following the successful festival last year. Through this festival, we aim to raise interest, awareness and educate the local audiences about European and Namibian films, as well as strengthening cooperation and communication between the EU and Namibian public and local partners,” the EU Ambassador to Namibia, Sinikka Antila, said.

The delegation’s Press and Communications Officer, Twaku Kayofa, said that the festival, which will take place at The Village Opera House in Windhoek, will be hosted under the theme “Youth in diversity: our shared roots for a better future”.

Kayofa explained that the festival will screen a total of 18 films – half of these will be feature films and the other half will be local short films. He added that the Namibia Film Commission (NFC) facilitated and provided short opening films from diverse local film producers, which is intended to speak to Namibian societal realities.

“We are pleased to once again be part of this instalment of the EU Film Festival as the film regulatory body in the country. We always welcome events that promote Namibian content produced by our film practitioners,” the NFC Secretary, Florence Haifene, said.

The festival will also present a four-day video production workshop in Keetmanshoop from 11 to 14 October 2022. The workshop will focus on teaching the fundamentals of filming, scriptwriting and film editing. The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany funded the workshop, which will be hosted in partnership with the University of Namibia (UNAM).
