Weekend rain brings excitement, more odd showers expected

WHILE some regions had an extremely hot weekend, recording temperatures as high as 37°C, other regions received a few odd showers – prompting Namibians to, once again, unite on social media to express their gratitude and excitement for the long-awaited rain.

The gratitude is especially significant as the rain proved to be life-saving in the Hardap Region, where it extinguished a wildfire in the Tsumis area. A video captured by Heine Isaacs, shows how the area, which has been tormented by wildfires over the last few weeks, was saved by the rain from further damages.

Tsumis, however, was not the only arid place that received rain over the weekend.

Another Facebook user shared a photo of the cloudy skies at the Namib Desert, captioned “first drops in the Namib”. This post quickly gained attention, with some expressing their gratitude for the first drops, while others revealed that Swakopmund and Henties Bay also received rain during the weekend.

It is not only Namibians that showed excitement over the weekend’s weather. A French tourist, Julien Ferla, also shared photos of the rain-heavy skies between Kuiseb Canyon and Swakopmund, with the caption, “I could smell the rain in September”.

Fortunately, the excitement does not have to come to an end yet. According to Namibia Meteorological Services, the country can expect more odd showers on Tuesday. This is predicted to come with cloudy and cool to mild weather for the coast, while the interior can expect cloudy and warm to hot weather.

The hottest temperatures are expected in the North, particularly the North-west.

In this regard, Khorixas, Okakarara, Opuwo and Sesfontein, in the Kunene Region, can expect minimum temperatures ranging between 18°C and 20°C, with maximum temperatures ranging between 36°C and 38°C. In the Omusati Region, Okahoa and Outapi are expected to record minimum temperatures ranging between 16°C and 18°C and maximum temperatures ranging between 36°C and 37°C.

Namibia Meteorological Services’ weather forecast also indicate that Oshakati and Ondangwa, in the Oshana Region, are expected to record minimum temperatures of 18°C, with maximum temperatures of 36°C and 37°C respectively. In the Oshikoto Region, Tsumeb and Omuthiya are expected to record minimum temperatures of 18°C and maximum temperatures of 36°C. Eenhana and Okongo, in the Ohangwena Region, are also expected to record minimum and maximum temperatures of 18°C and 36°C.

In the North-east, Nkurekuru, in the Kavango West Region, Rundu, in the Kavango East Region and Katima Mulilo, in the Zambezi Region, can expect minimum temperatures of 16°C, 22°C and 20°C respectively, with maximum temperatures ranging between 36°C and 37°C.
