THE promotion of industrialization through agro-processing to bring about food security and mineral beneficiation are some of the issues to be discussed during president Hage Geingob’s visit to Kinshasa, where he will attend the two-day 42nd Ordinary SADC Heads of State and Government summit.
The president will depart today, 16 August and return from the DRC on 18 August 2022.
The summit will be held under the theme: “Promoting industrialization through agro-processing, mineral beneficiation, and regional value chains for inclusive and resilient economic growth.
The Ordinary Southern African Development Community Summit is responsible for the overall policy direction and control of functions of the SADC Community, ultimately making it the policy-making institution of SADC, and is held annually by Heads of State and Government from the 16 SADC Member States.
Dr. Alfredo Hengari, presidential spokesperson said that Geingob served as the Chairperson of SADC in 2018/2019, presiding over the affairs of the SADC region during a difficult period for the region, including the 2018 elections in the DRC, which resulted in the first peaceful transfer of power in the history of the DRC since independence on 30 June 1960.
“President Geingob as Chairperson of SADC also provided advice and counsel to President Azali Assoumani of the Union of the Comoros at a time when that country was facing a period of political uncertainty ahead of the elections of 2019.” Dr. Hengari said.
During the 42nd Ordinary Summit in the DRC, which will be preceded by the Organ Troika Summit of Heads of State and Government, President Geingob will relinquish the position of the Deputy Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defense, and Security Cooperation.
The Organ Troika Summit convening on 16 August 2022 will discuss the Report of the Chairperson of Summit; Political and Security Situation in the Region, including the consolidation of Democracy in the Region.
Every year, a different country takes over as Chairman of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defense, and Security Cooperation. The Organ on Politics, Defense and Security Cooperation is established under Article 9 of the SADC Treaty. The mandate of the Chairperson of the SADC Organ is outlined in Article 4 of the SADC Protocol on Politics, Defense, and Security Cooperation. The SADC Chairperson is responsible for the overall policy direction and achievement of the objectives of the Organ, of promoting peace and security in the SADC Region, in consultation with the SADC Troika.
H.E Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, the current SADC Chairperson will hand over the SADC Chair to His Excellency Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, President of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Incoming Chairperson of SADC.
