Widespread frost, even in the Kalahari Desert

AMONG the many wonders that this year’s winter season brought about, is the breath-taking frosty conditions in areas that are typically dry.

Even Africa’s second largest desert, the Kalahari, was not exempted from the current frosty conditions experienced in the country. Photos shared with Informanté show that the typically semi-arid desert’s rusty-coloured sand was also covered in white frost this week.

The frosty conditions are also not limited to the eastern edge of the country as many reports and photos shared during the week can affirm. Many other places – particularly in the South – also experienced widespread frost this week. This can also be seen in a photo that was shared with Informanté, featuring a tree standing amidst frost-covered grass in the southern town of Maltahöhe in the //Kharas region.

Various other places in different regions, including Otjozondjupa and Khomas, also experienced frosty conditions this week – and the widespread nature of these conditions has convinced many that this year’s winter season might be colder than the previous years. However, according to Namibia Meteorological Services, that can only be proven once the season is over.

For now, Namibians can prepare for more cold conditions as frost is expected to persist, especially in the Hardap, Erongo, Otjozondjupa and Omaheke regions during the rest of the week.

With regards to the weekend, Namibia Meteorological Services predicted that the South can expect foggy conditions, while thundershowers are also expected to persist in the //Kharas region and further rain in places in the Hardap and Omaheke regions.
