Unhealthy conditions at Oshakati’s mental health facility

Placido Hilukilwa

HEALTH professionals and members of the public have described the unhygienic condition of the Psychiatric Ward of the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital as “horrible” and “unbreathable”.

Ward 16 is described as a dilapidated building where ablution facilities have been out of order for months. And the place stinks to high heaven.

A middle-aged female resident of Ongwediva who allegedly visited Ward 16 this week, said: “The unhygienic condition is horrible. It endangers not only the health of the medical and nursing professionals and that of the mental health patients, but also the health of those of us who visit the place.”

A nurse who spoke to Informanté on condition of anonymity said that the deputy health minister visited the Ward in February last year and left a promise that the situation would be addressed.
“We are still waiting,” she said.

Approached for comment, the health ministry’s Executive Director Ben Nangombe said that the ministry is aware of the situation and the hospital management has already been instructed to address the issue as quickly as possible.
