THE rehabilitation of the 47-km Onhuno-Eenhana main road in the Ohangwena Region was welcomed by road users and community members alike when it was launched by Minister John Mutorwa earlier this year.
Community members have, for many years, complained about potholes and a generally degraded condition of the Onhuno-Eenhana road. They were excited when its rehabilitation was announced.
However, they are now complaining about apparent slow progress and unnecessary obstruction of the free flow of vehicular movement.
It is alleged that the contractor, UNIK Construction Engineering Namibia, is unnecessarily obstructing vehicular movement by not constructing detours/temporary roads.
“Motorists are stopped and made to spend several minutes waiting for road users from the opposite direction, an unbearable inconvenience for us and for those on their way to and from work,” said a taxi driver.
His sentiments were shared by several motorists who spoke to Informanté.
They revealed a recent incident in which a pregnant woman, who was on her way to the Engela District Hospital, delivered her baby inside a car that was stopped and made to yield for oncoming traffic for almost 30 minutes.
