THE Oshakati Mayoral Cup did not only give football lovers a chance to watch exciting football but left them wanting more.

This was evident at the Oshakati Independence Stadium fully packed with football fans during the tournament held from 25 to 29 May where Ohangwena-based football club Eshoke Chula Chula was crowned the champion.

They defeated Tsandi Village Council 2-0 after brilliant goals by Ndakelwa Wakupulile and Moses Shivolo which led the team to victory.

The Ohangwena boys scooped a floating trophy, 18 gold medals and N$15 000 cash, while Tsandi Village Council walked away with 18 silver medals and N$10 000.
Chipolopolo and Brigade both won N$3 000.

In the veterans’ category, Tsandi Veterans scooped the first place and walked away with 18 gold medals and N$6 000 after beating Ondangwa Masters by five goals to four on penalties.

Ondangwa Masters were awarded 16 silver medals and N$4 000, while Oshana Nampol and Northern Coaches both received N$2 000.

Oshakati Mayor Leonard Hango said no tournament in the North has ever registered the overwhelming numbers the single event had.

“The tournament was indeed a success and attracted a huge number of people from all corners of the country.”

Hango said the event united football lovers, bringing a lot of joy not only to the participating teams but also to the residents of Oshakati and the surrounding villages who had the opportunity to sell and enjoy kapana and drinks.

He said security was tight, creating a conducive environment for attendees.

Hango then promised another exciting tournament, come 2023, with the number of the teams doubling.
