AN elderly woman identified as Johanna Hendrihetta Simon (83) died on Friday after being tied up in a housebreaking incident.
According to Chief Inspector Elifas Kuwinga the incident of house breaking with the intent to commit robbery and murder happened between Friday 27 May, 22:00 and Saturday 28 May 2022, 07:00 in Aub Street, Mariental.
It is alleged that four suspects forced open the back door of the house with a crowbar to gain entry and tied up two female occupants with pantyhose, tape and clothing pieces.
They then allegedly looted the house and fled the scene. One of the victims, a housekeeper, managed to loosen herself and found the elderly victim had passed away.
Kuwinga states that it is unknown at this stage what the cause of death is, but there’s a possibility that she might have been suffocated.
It’s further unknown what items are missing, but what could be detected at this stage is two cellphones and two wedding rings with unknown value.
The suspects are unknown and police investigations continue.
