THERE has been an upsurge in the number of Covid-19 cases over the past two days, particularly in the capital where 86% of the new positive cases have been reported, according to the Ministry of Health and Social Services’ latest Covid-19 update.
The ministry reported 57 new positive cases, of which 49 are from the Khomas region, specifically Windhoek, and four are from the Erongo region. These cases were recorded from 1 001 results, translating to a 5,7% positivity ratio, which represents a 2,5% increase from last week Friday.
“This could just be a tip of an iceberg as many people might have mingled during Easter weekend. We therefore strongly advise the use of face masks, observing a safe distance and avoiding crowded places,” the Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Kalumbi Shangula, stated.
The addition of the new Covid-19 cases brings the total number of active cases to 491, of which four are hospitalised in the Khomas and Zambezi regions. The ministry reported that all of the hospitalised cases are unvaccinated.
The ministry also reported one Covid-19 death from the Engela district in the Ohangwena region. The deceased, who was unvaccinated and had known comorbidities, passed away on Tuesday. The ministry did not reveal her age, but stated that she was between the ages of ten and nineteen.
“The public is urged to get vaccinated to avert serious illnesses and negative consequences of Covid-19 infections during the upcoming winter period,” Shangula advised.
As of 20 April, 402 392 people have been fully vaccinated. This represents 22,6% of the target population of 1 779 271.
