WITH sports activities being idle in the northern area, the Oshakati Town Council under the sports office department will host its first Mayoral Cup.
Over N$70 000 was put aside for the tournament to be held from 25 to 29 May 2022 at the Oshakati Independence Stadium.
The tournament aims to involve inhabitants of Oshana, Omusati, Ohangwena and Oshikoto and revive sports in the northern part of the country.
Mayor of Oshakati Leonard Hango said this will be the first-ever Cup hosted in the region and will not be the last.
He said reviving sports in the region will contribute to crime reduction and other social ills by keeping the mass entertained.
“It’s an open tournament for all teams, either premier league teams or local teams or organizations,” he said.
The legendary teams will consist of players aged 35 and above.
Hango said such tournaments will also benefit the town in the long run through sales of business services.
