Drug-dealing refugee escapes from custody

Staff Reporter

A DRUG-DEALING Congolese refugee, Gilbert Kalenga (32), is on the run after escaping from the Swakopmund police station on Monday.

Kalenga, of the Osire refugee camp near Otjiwarongo, was in custody for dealing in, alternatively possession of, cannabis worth N$1.35 million. He also has a pending 2019 drug case after being found in possession of one gram of cocaine worth N$500. Kalenga was then released on N$3 000 bail.

On Monday sometime between 17:00 and 20:00, he cut the security bars of the kitchen window in the Swakopmund police holding cells’ corridor and fled.

How he got to the corridor or why he was left there is internally investigated, according to the Erongo police.

It is suspected that Kalenga fled to Otjiwarongo or Windhoek.

Anyone with information on Kalenga’s whereabouts can contact Deputy Commissioner Iikuyu at 081 246 4757, Detective Inspector Rosa Tjihavero at 081 821 4756 or any nearest police station.
