Covid-19 deaths pass 4 000 mark

COVID-19 has so far claimed the lives of 4 006 Namibians and the pandemic remains a great concern in the country, despite the decline in active cases, new infections and hospitalizations.

The Ministry of Health and Social Services’ latest Covid-19 update reported 25 new cases out of 1 019 results, representing a 2,5% positivity ratio. Of the new infections, 22 are unvaccinated.

The Omusati (5) and the Ohangwena (5) regions recorded the highest number of new cases based on the latest Covid-19 update.

There has been a decline in the number of active cases, hospitalisations and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) cases over the last month.

On 22 January, the ministry reported 8 566 active cases, of which 229 were hospitalised and 29 were in the ICUs.

On 23 February, the ministry reported 2 523 active cases, of which 34 are hospitalised and three are in the ICU. All of the ICU cases and 30 of the 37 hospitalizations are unvaccinated.

The Ministry’s latest Covid-19 updates announced the death of five unvaccinated men this week. The deceased were a 58-year-old man from Oshikuku, two men from Katima Mulilo, aged 78 and 89, as well as two men from Gobabis and Tsumeb.

As of 23 February, 373 802 people of which 1 871 are children are vaccinated. This represents 21% of the total target population of 1 779 271.
