THE torrential downpour of the past two days has restored the hope of subsistence farmers in the North who were worried about a weeks’ long dry spell.
Oshikoto, Ohangwena, Oshana and Omusati regions registered good rains since Sunday evening.
“Our hope of a good harvest is restored. The oshanas are full of water and the grazing is already showing significant improvement,” said Petrus Hiyolwa, a farmer in the Ongenga Constituency.

Residents of Oshakati have reported a southward inflow of water in the Cuvelai water system, an indication of heavy rain in the Namibia-Angola border area.
Besides improved crop fields and the good grazing, residents have also started benefiting by catching frogs and freshwater fish for own consumption and for the market.
“I caught and sold 90 frogs pocketing N$600 over the weekend,” said Okakukanangula resident Ben Kambonde.
A bunch of three frogs goes for N$20 while the price of fish depends mostly on the size of each fish.
