THE South is wet and the water keeps flowing.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land reform, ephemeral rivers in the southern part of the country came down in floods, such as Karris, Grass and Dirichas, due to good rainfall in their catchments over the past few days.
The Neckartal Dam that stood at 99.1% earlier was overflowing rapidly on Wednesday, according to Danie Viljoen from Keetmanshoop. Michelle Silver Viljoen shared visuals of the splendid sight.
The latest flood bulletin indicates the Naute Dam stands at 108.2% with an inflow rate of 172.8 m³/s and the sluices were opened. The Hardap Dam is at 73.5 % and releases are proposed to reduce the level to 70 %.
On the page Rain Namibia Jonathan said Snyfontein settlement received 42 mm of rain and that the rivers were “filled to the brim”. Bertie Marais said Farm Vredeshoop near Aroab received 40 mm.
People should remain alert for possible high floods on the lower part of the Fish River and the Lower Orange as more rain is forecasted in the catchment areas, the Ministry warned.
In the rest of the country, good rainfall was also received.
A resident of Divundu in the Kavango East region reported “rain for days” up to Tuesday and 18 mm was measured at Gobabis in Omaheke.
The Zambezi River at Katima Mulilo rose to 1.80 m, and the water level is currently above normal. The Okavango River at Rundu recorded 4.68 m.
Communities are advised to be on high alert for possible flood risks and take the necessary precautionary measures.
