Fishrot-accused owe taxman millions

IN the ongoing bail hearing of the six Fishrot-accused in the Windhoek High Court, Anti-Corruption Commission investigator and state witness Andreas Kanyangela on Monday revealed they owe the Namibian government millions of dollars in tax.

 

The bail hearing of James Hatuikulipi, Otneel Shuudifonya, Phillipus Mwapopi, Mike Nghipunya, former justice minister Sacky Shanghala and Pius Mwatelulo will continue today, starting at 11:00, and will be live-streamed on Informanté Facebook.

 

On Monday, Kanyangela told Judge Shafimana Ueitele the Ministry of Finance was tasked to carry out tax investigations, and whether the accused and the entities they owned paid tax.

 

Kanyangela read into the record tax amounts owed by the Fishrot- accused and stated that Hatuikulipi owed the taxman over N$21 million.
He added that on an income tax statement of 2014, Hatuikulipi owed the taxman more than N$403 000.

 

For the 2015 financial year, Hatuikulipi owed N$4.9 million, N$7,2 million in 2016, N$4.2 million in 2017 and N$4.5 million in 2018.

 

The tax records of former justice minister Sacky Shanghala was also revealed, showing he owed N$695 000 in 2014, N$673 000 in 2015, N$339 000 in 2016, more than N$233 000 in 2017, over N$82 000 in 2018, and more than N$76 000 in 2019.

 

The accounts of Fine Seafood Investment Trust of Otjozondjupa Regional Council official Otneel Shuudifonya, that allegedly also misappropriated funds, were also revealed.

 

The letter from Inland Revenue addressed to Fine Seafood Trust showed that the entity owed over N$1.2 million in taxes in 2018, a total of N$2.1 million in 2019, and over N$3.3 million in 2019.
