In the local market this week, the NSX Local index was down 1.66% at 515.2, and the NSX Overall Index was down 4.84% at 1581.9. As at 25 January 2022, Namibia Breweries was the largest local company on the exchange, with market capitalization of N$ 10.2 billion, followed by FirstRand Namibia Limited with N$ 7.9 billion, Mobile Telecommunications Limited with N$ 6.5 billion and Capricorn Group Limited with N$ 5.7 billion. Mobile Telecommunications Limitedlead the market this week, closing at N$ 8.6 per share after growth of 3.5%. In terms of volume Capricorn Group Limited lead the market with N$ 0.4 million worth of shares traded, with Mobile Telecommunications Limitedin second place with N$ 0.1 million worth of shares traded. The local currency gained 1.80% against the US Dollar, to close at N$ 15.22 per USD, and gained 2.47% against the British Pound, to close at N$ 20.55 per GBP. It closed at N$ 20.55 against the Euro, a gain of 2.03%.

The Namibia Statistics Agency released the Trade Statistics Bulletin for November 2021, and revealed that trade during the month decreased by 13.8%, with N$ 20.9 billion in trade compared to N$ 24.2 billion in October 2021. This is higher than the N$ 19.8 billion recorded in November 2020. Exports increased by 1.3% to N$ 8.8 billion, with imports decreasing by 22.3% to N$ 12.1 billion. As a result, the country recorded a trade deficit of N$ 3.3 billion, narrowing from the N$ 6.9 billion deficit recorded in October. The increase in exports was mainly due to uranium exports increasing by N$658 million, Fruit and nut exports increasing by N$280 million, Ores and base metal exports increasing by N$194 million and gold exports increasing by N$164 million. The decrease in imports was due to copper ore imports decreasing by N$1.3 billion, petroleum oil imports decreasing by N$1.2 billion, precious metal imports decreasing by N$553 million, and motor vehicle imports decreasing by N$203 million. China was Namibia’s largest export market (39.7%), while South Africa was Namibia’s largest import market (420.1%). Most export goods left via seaports (56.61%), while 79.3% of imports were done via road.
