THE body of George Shitima Kativa, aged 20 years old, was found in a prison cell after he allegedly hanged himself after he could not pay a fine for his release from prison.
According to Nampol spokesperson Chief Inspector Elifas Kuwinga, the incident happened on Thursday at about 13:00 at the Evaristus Shikongo Correctional Facility in Tsumeb.
It is alleged that the deceased was supposed to be released from prison by paying a fine but he did not have enough money to pay.
He was taken back to the cell, only to be discovered later hanging from the burglar bars of the bathroom window with a jersey around his neck by fellow inmates.
The deceased was sentenced on 26 November 2021 for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
He was sentenced to a N$5 000 fine or 24 months imprisonment.
In addition, he was also sentenced for malicious damage to property and was fined N$1 000 or six months imprisonment.
The deceased was also required to pay a fine of N$1 000 or spend three months in prison for drug possession.
The body was taken to the Tsumeb Police Mortuary for a post mortem.
