Database collection to address youth unemployment

UNEMPLOYMENT remains a serious concern in Namibia especially among youth, hence, Ongenga constituency councillor Matthew Shikongo is promising to find solutions for the youth in his constituency.

Shikongo revealed that one of the plans his office has drawn up is to collect data for unemployed youth for a better information dissemination strategy.

According to him, the constituency has thus far registered 169 unemployed youths on their database, and the number is expected to increase as they engage more youths.

“Once we have a full database of unemployed youth, we will be able to easily know how to address the situation and how to direct them best,” he said.

Shikongo, however, expressed his dismay over some of the youth who feel that it is the councillor who has to go to them instead of them coming to the constituency office.

“They expect the councillor to go to their residences and pick them up whenever there are job opportunities, and when assigned jobs, they refuse to travel long distances.”

Moreover, as part of creating employment, Shikongo indicated that plans are underway to engage investors who would create jobs and contribute to the development of the constituency.

He urged skilled and semi-skilled youth to use their know-how to create employment opportunities for themselves and for others instead of waiting on the government to create employment for them.

Shikongo indicated that his constituency has identified 20 people living with disability who are expected to get assistance by his office as funds become available.
