Parents leave toddler twins on street, go drinking

A CASE of child negligence will be registered against the parents to one-year-old twins who left their toddlers next to the roadside in the Havana informal settlement and went on a drinking spree on Friday night.

City police Fabian Amukwelele said conducting their daily police patrols, they recieved a call from a concerned member of the public in Havana who found the twins unattended.

When the police arrived at the scene, neighbours informed them that both parents often leave the toddlers alone and unattended to go drinking.

He added that the twins were barely wearing clothes and were not covered in a warm blanket although Summer nights tend to get cold and on that particular Friday night, the Havana informal settlement was dark and chilly.

The team from E-Med Rescue 24 ensured that the babies received medical assistance on site before they were taken to hospital for further treatment.

Amukwele said the police is currently collecting information to assess whether or not the twins are safe in the care of their parents.

In the meantime, the twins will remain at the Katutura hospital in the care of social workers.

“Since the police took over the children, the parents have not yet come forward looking for the twins,” said Amukwelele.
