THE First Lady of Namibia, Monica Geingos, is advising people against consuming alcohol before going to get their Covid-19 jab as the drug weakens immunity.
The first lady made these remarks during her #LoveProtects vaccination outreach programme in the capital’s Hakahana informal settlement.
Geingos said they people should not underestimate the level of alcohol dependence in the country.
“Over the past seven weeks I’ve been travelling through informal settlements and one of the most repeated questions is on the consumption of alcohol. Getting vaccinated under the influence of alcohol is strongly not advised as it may interact with the vaccine, as the drug weakens immunity,” Geingos said.
She further stated that people living with co-morbidities such as HIV, diabetes or High Blood Pressure can get vaccinated as long as their conditions are stable.
Geingos further echoed the sentiments of the central banks governor Johannes Gawanab and said vaccination policy is economic policy.
“I’m proud of private sector companies who have aimed at getting their top executives vaccinated and this eventually trickles down in the organisation. Getting vaccinated is the only way we can save our jobs, our businesses and the economy,” Geingos said.
