THE third edition of the Ogongo Annual Community Tournament has officially kicked off at the Omugongo location in Omusati Region, with 17 teams expected to compete for the grand prize.
The tournament, which started today, is expected to conclude on Sunday.
According to tournament chairperson, Leonhard Alweendo, of the 17 teams participating, 16 are from the Omusati Region and one from the Oshikoto Region.
Alweendo added that due to the heavily packed tournament weekend in the north, many of the teams could not make it.
He did, however, mention that he is satisfied with the turn out and the behaviour displayed by the players.
“The tournament is being hosted to bring soccer lovers to one spot, at the same time keeping the youth off the streets. It’s all about promoting football in the northern region,” he said.
Alweendo further indicated that a total of N$25 000 is up for grabs.
The first runner-up will walk away with N$10 500, 18 medals and a floating trophy.
The second runner-up will win N$6 500 and 18 medals, while the third runner-up will get N$3 500 and 18 medals.
Deputy Minister of Works and Transport, Veikko Nekundi, is the main sponsor of the tournament after wrote a cheque of N$10 000.
