Fires raging again all over Namibia

Fires raging again all over Namibia

Niël Terblanché

FARMERS in the Kalahari near Aranos and Gochas are desperately battling fires that are destroying large swathes of grazing.

It is the first time in almost a decade that the preceding rainy season was sufficient enough to grow waving fields of grass.

Farmers that saw the drought of almost eight years destroy their livelihood are now looking at their hope go up in large plumes of smoke.

The Kalahari fire has already run its course over at least ten farms and strong winds are causing it to “jump” across roads in the area.

While residents of the Namibian portion of the Kalahari Desert have been reaching out for help, farmers in the area between Karibib and Omuraur are also battling a raging bush fire.

Strong to moderate winds have been chasing the flames onwards making it difficult for firefighters to bring the blaze under control.

Bushfires were also reported on farms situated between Outjo and Otjiwarongo.

Most of the fires in the Paresis Mountain area have however been brought under control through the hard work of well-organized firefighting teams.
