THE President of Namibia, Dr Hage Geingob, has conferred the honour of National Hero on the late Marco Hausiku who passed away on Heroes Day at the age of 67.
The President made the announcement during a visit to the widow and the bereaved family of the late Hausiku on Monday. The family accepted the honour.
In his message of condolences to the family, Dr Geingob said the passing of Marco Hausiku, a highly dependable freedom fighter and disciplined servant of the Namibian people and the SWAPO Party is devastating.

“The fact that Comrade Marco Hausiku died on Heroes Day, 26 August 2021 is not a coincidence. It is a clear marker of his outstanding contributions to our liberation struggle and the development of an independent Namibia. I extend on behalf of the Government and the SWAPO Party sincere condolences to his wife, the children, family and comrades,” he said.
The late Marco Hausiku at the time of his death served as the Deputy Secretary-General of the SWAPO Party. He also served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2004 to 2010 and Deputy Prime Minister from 2010 to 2014 as well as the Rector of the SWAPO Party School since 2016.
The President and his delegation signed a book of condolences during the visit.
The final arrangements for the funeral at Heroes Acre will be made available at a later stage.
